Major structures and features:
Laxman Temple
This brick temple dates back to the 7th century AD. It is dedicated to Vishnu but also shows Shaivite and Shakti elements. The architecture and carvings of the temple are extremely subtle and attractive.
Surang Tila Mandap and other remains
The temple complex has remains of a mandap and pillars called Surang Tila. These structures must have been part of a grand mandap.
Buddhist and Jain Viharas
The excavations have also revealed Buddhist Viharas like Tivaradeva and Harshagupta Viharas, Buddhist and Jain sculptures, markets and other sites like bathing-kund. These include depictions of Buddhist art and mithuna (love-related) life situations.
Archaeological significance and history
Sirpur was known as a rich cultural-religious center of South Kosala. This place was also described by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang. A synthesis of various religions can be seen here—traditions of Shaiva, Vaishnava, Buddhist and Jain are all present here.
Fairs and Pilgrimages
Sirpur is also a major pilgrimage site. There is a special presence of devotees here on Mahashivratri and a fair is organized.
